The Herald of Christ

The Herald
award is the culmination of the Battalion achievement
program. Young men who have worked hard to finish the regular achievement
path, and who demonstrate personal depth and a desire to grow in Christ
may be given the opportunity to begin this special
award.

 | What
are the prerequisites?
 | The candidate
confesses that Jesus Christ is his Savior and Lord (Romans
10:9-10).
|
 | The
candidate must have completed Third Star Rank.
|
 | The
candidate shows evidence in his life of growth toward
Christian maturity and exhibits no major behavior or attitude
problems.
|
 | The
candidate must have passed his 16th
birthday
|
 | The candidate must be
actively involved in a local Brigade
Unit.
|

|
 | How do I
start?
- When you are nearing completion of Third Star, your Captain
will discuss this special challenge with you. If you agree to
pursue it he will order the Herald package form from the Brigade
office.
- Your Captain
will contact your Pastor and the Unit
Chairman to sit on your candidate committee. When they are all
ready proceed to the next step.
- Read through the Herald packet with your committee. Design
your internship program and fill out the application in the
packet.
- Send a record of your achievement progress from Observer to
Three Star along with the Herald application to your Brigade Regional Representative.
- Designate a start date for the program and once confirmation
has been received from CSB you may begin.
- This award must be started before the candidate has reached
his 19th birthday, and be completed no
later than his 21st birthday. Please Note: Experience
has shown that specific goals and a timeline of completion will
dramatically increase your chances of actually finishing this
project.

study?
Bible Exploration
Read the following books of the Bible and write
a 250 words for each book identifying the discoveries, highlights, or
truths that were meaningful to you.:

Bible Doctrine
 | A
candidate must meet with a member of the church’s staff (pastor, DCE,
youth pastor, elder) on at least three occasions to study and discuss
the CSB Standard of Faith, or the church’s constitution or
confession. The study will be directed by the staff person. A written
report or summary of this doctrinal study is optional to be decided by
the Committee.

 | What will I
do?
Ministry Project
 |
A
candidate must engage in a church-related service or leadership
project for a period of at least three months, if the activity is
weekly; less if the activity involves each day of a week or several
days a week. The project should be a challenge to the candidate,
perhaps in an area in which he has limited experience. He should
be involved with other people so that he has the opportunity to
disciple another young person(s) or learn from an older person(s).
Some examples might be: teaching a Sunday School class, assisting in
children’s church, serving as a junior counselor at camp, leading
singing in the evening service.
A candidate may be involved in more than one activity. |
Community Project
 |
A
candidate must engage in a service or leadership project in the
community for a period of at least three months, if the activity is
weekly; less if the activity involves each day of a week or several
days a week. The project should be challenging to the candidate and
give him the opportunity to put his Christian faith into action in
his community. This activity may or may not be connected to the
local church.
Some examples: serve
as a volunteer in a park district or YMCA day camp, serve on a youth
cleanup crew for the city, engage in an evangelism project with
others, serve as a volunteer in a senior citizen’s home. |

Essay
or Theme
 |
A
1000-word essay or theme paper is required of the candidate
describing his relationship with Christ. This will be accomplished
by answering the four questions below. The paper must be typewritten
and completed one month prior to the end of the internship period. A
copy must be sent to the CSB field representative. |

I'm done?
- All work including the essay is approved by your candidate
committee.
- The essay is sent to your Regional
Director to be reviewed and marked.
- The candidate, his committee, and the Regional
Director will meet for a final meeting to discuss the
candidate's work and approve or request further revisions.
- All work including the essay is approved by the Regional
Director.
- A date is set for the presentation and the candidate committee
arranges for a service of celebration.
- The presentation is made with pictures and an article to be
sent to Brigade
Leader and local media for future publication.

Men

Welcome to the Herald of Christ for Men section. This
discipleship program takes a minimum of one year to complete, under the
mentoring eye of another man and your Pastor. The Herald takes you on a
path which will build your faith and walk whether you are a new or
seasoned Christian. Spending time in God's Word alone and with your
accountability group will propel you forward in ways you won't event
imagine at first. If simply meeting expectations isn't in your
vocabulary, I challenge you to take on this discipleship
project.

 | How do I
start?
- Order the Herald of Christ booklet.
- Find a man in your church or community who you respect as a
committed Christian leader. This man should also be one who will
push you to reach further than you thought possible and who will
hold you accountable. Much of what you achieve in the program
will be based around you mentor.
- Contact your potential mentor and your Pastor to request
their presence on your candidate committee. When both are ready
proceed to the next step.
- Read through the Herald booklet with your Pastor and mentor.
Design your internship program and fill out the application in
the middle of the book.
- Send the application to your Regional
Director.
- Designate a start date for the program and once confirmation
has been received from CSB you may begin.
- THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT FOR COMPLETION - However: experience
has shown that specific goals and a timeline of completion will
dramatically increase your chances of actually finishing this
project.

broaden your appreciation of your church's outreach

For example a week of camp would be equivalent due to
overall hours. |

A three month
community project in your home
town.
 |
From community
work crews to nursing home volunteer, from special
events to community education, this project is
designed to acquaint you with the needs and interests
of your home town and its
people. |
 |
Must be a
minimum of 15 hours total project time, but should
average around 36 to 40. |
 |
This project may
be time compressed if larger blocks of time are used.
For example a week running a daily recreation program
would be equivalent due to overall hours. |

 |
Begin supporting a
missionary.
 |
They can be with
Brigade,
sent from your church or denomination, or from an
inter church mission agency. |
 |
Remember money
isn't the most important thing to missionary staff.
Prayer, letters and small gifts are vital links to
home. Money simply allows you to spread the Gospel in
more places than you may be able to reach
otherwise. |

 |
Serve as a Brigade
leader for at least one year. |
 |
Complete the Basic
Leadership Training Course. Contact your Regional
Director to arrange this
course. |

Complete at least 3 Advanced
Leadership Training Courses (modules in US). |

Attend a CSB or church
