The first step is to decide what you need.  The Genesee Gateway offers you several choices regarding how your web site works.  You need to think about these choices, and decide which make the most sense for your web site.  Please take the time to read through this section so you can better understand your choices.

  • Do You Need Volunteers?

Most organizations wishing to set up a web site find people within their own organization who can create and maintain the site.  This usually works out best-- who better than members of your own organization to work on your web site?

If you can't find anyone within your organization to help create and maintain your web site, we may be able to help.  We have volunteers who we can try to match up with your needs.  We can't guarantee a volunteer for every site requesting one, but we often can find someone who is interested in helping.

If you need a volunteer, please write to webmaster@ggw.org and describe your needs.

  • Do You Need FrontPage Support?

FrontPage can be used to create web sites on any server, but it works best when you publish to a server with the FrontPage Server Extensions. Our servers support the FrontPage Server Extensions, however we have to manually activate this feature on your request.  It is not enabled by default.

The Genesee Gateway supports the use of FrontPage but that should not be considered an endorsement for the product.  FrontPage is a sophisticated package that works well for many people, but not everyone.  You have to decide if it makes sense to use FrontPage (or any other web site editing package for that matter), and that is best done by actually reading about and trying the product.  Microsoft offers a "test drive" version of FrontPage at http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage you can try if you are interested.  Or, you can write to webmaster@ggw.org describing your needs, and we can try to figure out if FrontPage is a good match for you and your organization.

Note:  Using the FrontPage database publishing feature that requires a Windows server is NOT available on our servers. For applications that require a server-based database, MYSQL can be turned on for you but you need to ask!

That's it for the first step.  Let's move to step two, choosing a domain name.
