From the President

Greetings RASL members and other area SLMS!

This year RASL embarks on the journey of "The Year After."  Our organization, with the leadership of Marie Barron, SLMS at Churchville-Chili JH, and Angela Boccuzzi-Reichert, SLMS at Hilton Middle School.  We worked as one with a committee of over 115 volunteers to show the state the strength of RASL.  This year, our talk becomes action.

My goal of this year's presidency is to define our organization and decide what our long-term goals should be.  Lisa Osur, our new Vice President, has great ideas - and the calendar is shaping up beautifully. We have already had two RASL meetings, and are working to make RASL as best as it can be.

The survey that went out to members this Fall gave us indications about what our membership wants out of RASL.  This group exists to serve YOU, not to put more work on your plate.  Soon we will be seeking members to run for office.  Consider becoming a part of RASL and sharing your talents.  With only a few programs and meetings a year, it is an easy way to be involved.

If you have not renewed your membership, or if you have never joined RASL, now is your time.  Be a part of defining what RASL is and should be. The membership form can be found at RASL - Rochester Area School Librarians - Join RASL

Fall 2006 Survey Results

In an effort to better serve our organization and meet our members’ needs we developed a survey asking for input on several issues including: programming, purpose of membership, issues to be addressed, communication formats and affiliations.  Several of the questions asked for thoughtful input and we very much appreciate you constructive suggestions and advise.  There were 42 responses to the survey.

The results of the survey are as follows:

  • 32% of our members have been members for over 10 years
  • 54 % of members do not often attend RASL programs
  • Most often given reason for not attending programs were
    • Conflicts
    • Timing- too early or too late
    • Distance
    • Irrelevance of subject
  • 84 % of our members attended the SLMS Conference- the next most popular events were the dinners with celebrities
  • 77 % of the respondents feel the present number of programs we offer is just right!
  • Although most people attend RASL programs to collaborate with peers and learn new things, 62 % also come for the professional development
  • 67 % feel we can serve our members better by providing reading advocacy programs (55 %), School Library Systems collaboration programs (55 %), library advocacy (41 %) and budget issues talks (38 %)
  • Although 51 % felt that hosting an all-day conference was a good idea, 41 % recognized that it would be a lot of work
  • If we were to run an all-day conference the top themes were best practices (71 %), assessing information literacy (54 %), collaborating with teachers (48 %) and electronic resources (46 %)
  • Exactly half of the respondents were from elementary libraries and half from secondary
  • 73 % prefer the RASL Newsletter delivered electronically
  • AND we have 2 people interested in getting involved at the Board level to help us make the changes necessary to provide you better services!

The RASL Board of Directors has reviewed the survey findings and is working towards making productive changes in our vision and how we can better meet your needs.

RASL Community Service Event

RASL Community Service @ Ronald McDonald House

Pictured (L to R): Mary Rinaldo, Jean Maeir, Lisa Osur, Benjamin Pulver, Tammy Pulver and Daniel Pulver

On Tuesday, December 5th several members of RASL came together to feed the 40 people staying at Ronald McDonald House which serves the families of seriously ill patients being treated at Strong Hospital.  The meal consisted of roast turkey with all the trimmings including  mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes & veggies, a southwestern salad, green salad, breads, cranberry sauce and gravy.  Thank you very much for those who worked on the project and contributed food items.  You get a really good feeling doing something for others in need- especially around the holidays!
