Impacts on sprawl

Smart Growth Coalition

of the Fingerlakes Region

Smart Growth is a phrase coined by the Governor of Maryland to be used as a system to manage growth. Unlike other systems of growth management, smart growth is an incentive based approach to growth management. Growth management is a response to development trends that are occurring across the nation often referred to as sprawl. Some growth management systems restrict where people can build new homes. Smart growth does not place these restrictions, instead it attempts to change  governmental policies and procedures that presently encourage sprawl.

The Smart Growth Coalition was formed by concerned citizens who are interested in protecting the character of the neighborhood we have chosen to live.  We are concerned with how sprawl is impacting our communities and want to support growth that enhances where we live.  We chose to live in a certain neighborhood because it had features or characteristics that we appreciate.  Sprawl tends to create problems in our community that take away form our quality of life.  We are citizens that recognize that the issue must be addressed both on the local level (our town) and regionally (Fingerlakes region).  We support the need for a regional plan where all residents throughout the Genesee Valley/Finger Lakes Region are empowered to be involved with land use decisions in their immediate communities.

The coalition advocates for smart growth measures that include;

Preservation of farmland and open space
Provide incentives for redeveloping vacant structures
Our elected officials to put forth a regional plan which includes the entire Genesee Valley/Finger Lakes region
Remove government practices that encourage sprawl
Create incentives for people to use existing infrastructure
Preserve older structures and our heritage

The problems arise when towns approve land use and zoning changes while disregarding the negative impacts that occur in their immediate region and adjacent towns.

The Smart Growth Coalition can not (and don't necessarily want to) address  every development project in our community.  We can field some of your concerns about development in our area.
