Smart Growth is a phrase coined by the Governor of Maryland to be used as a system to manage growth. Unlike other systems of growth management, smart growth is an incentive based approach to growth management.
Growth management is a response to development trends that are occurring across
the nation often referred to as sprawl. Some growth management systems restrict where people can build new homes. Smart growth
does not place these restrictions, instead it attempts to change governmental
policies and procedures that presently encourage sprawl.
The Smart Growth Coalition was formed by concerned citizens who are
interested in protecting the character of the neighborhood we have chosen to
live. We are concerned with how sprawl is impacting our communities and
want to support growth that enhances where we live. We chose to live in a
certain neighborhood because it had features or characteristics that we
appreciate. Sprawl tends to create problems in our community that take
away form our quality of life. We are citizens that recognize that the
issue must be addressed both on the local level (our town) and regionally (Fingerlakes
region). We support the need for a regional plan where all residents throughout the Genesee Valley/Finger Lakes Region are empowered to be involved with land use decisions in their immediate communities.
The coalition advocates for smart growth measures that include;
