The Irondequoit Historical Society was organized in 1963 by a group of seven Irondequoiters who shared a common interest in history - particularly that of Irondequoit and surrounding areas. Since its founding, the society has grown to a membership of over 100 people who attend monthly meetings at St. John's Lutheran Church, 800 Ridge Road East, in Irondequoit.

Meetings, held at 7:30 PM on the first Thursday of each month, September thru June (except January), include a brief business and informational update, program and refreshments. The November and June meeting time is 6:30 PM. Over the years a great variety of topics have been presented relating to area history, such as geology, Native Americans, arts and crafts, historic homes, pioneer families, Sea Breeze, Genesee River, and Irondequoit Bay.

The society supports the Town Historian by acting as docents at the Pioneer House Museum and helping to catalog historic documents. It also has a collection of local history publications available for purchase. A Preservation Committee, formed to promote public awareness of still-existing early homes and businesses, meets bi-monthly. The Pioneer House Museum, now located on the Town Hall campus, is an example of that group's efforts. It is currently working to restore the Hooker Cemetery.
